“More than Housing: How will we live in 2074?” is an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the April 1974 Revolution, bringing together all the higher education institutions for Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Fine Arts in Portugal.
"More than Housing" stems from concerns about the current housing crisis and reflects on three key ideas:
> The notion that the diversity of the social fabric is the norm and that the transformation of the city is inevitable in order to accommodate and give a voice to all, upholding the "right to the city”.
> The awareness that the best and newest ideas in architecture can and should drive this transformation.
> The remembrance of the radiant and transformative energy of 25 April 1974, to guide the actions of today and of the future.
This concern led to the creation of the "More than Housing" "More than Housing" programme, promoted by the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Porto. The programme called on academia to collaboratively produce critical reflection and research on housing over the course of 24 months. April 2023 marked its start, with the curators presenting the Manifesto , which was complemented by "7 Visions"– texts by professors and researchers from various fields of Architecture, aimed at fostering an open, cross-disciplinary discussion about today's housing problem. Having confirmed everyone's commitment to participating in this celebration, the ‘Call for Ideas: April 2074’was born. Seminars, meetings and debates offered possibilities and inspiration, intensity and a confrontation of ideas in which the students took centre stage.
New layers of questioning around topics stemming from the "More than Housing" manifesto arise from a parallel component of theoretical research, through a ‘Call for Papers’ with the suggestive title ‘Starbursting’ that will run until February 2025.
The Real as Substance, Speculation as Instrument
Paradoxically, despite the speculative nature of the proposals presented here, the research is rooted in reality. This is achieved by selecting specific places and addressing concrete problems, envisioning the future of buildings, locations, cities and territories that are both available and in need. Tentatively, the solutions tailored to each situation aim to respond to pressing questions in contemporary society:
How can we think about an inclusive city?
How to inhabit low-density areas?
How can we unlock innovation in housing models?
How can we respond to the housing crisis?
How can we promote sustainable housing?
How can we implement citizen participation?
How can we adapt the city to climate change?
How can technological advances be put into practice?
How Life Comes from Behind and Happens
However, the answers to these questions don’t always come from looking forward. It’s important to keep a close eye on what has been done and to learn from past processes.
In this context, we present three examples of overcoming the housing problem through public initiatives after the 25 April 1974 Revolution:
- Casal das Figueiras in Setúbal (312 homes built, 1975-79)
- Quinta da Malagueira in Évora (1100 homes, 1977-98)
- Lameiras Building in Famalicão (290 homes, 1978-83)
These are future-oriented models that should be revisited as subjects of reflection for current and future housing policies.
Transformative Convergence
This unprecedented convergence of the entire academic community in Portuguese Architecture, Urbanism, Landscape Architecture and Arts – bringing together around 1,751 students and 281 faculty members as part of the "More than Housing: How will we live in 2074?" initiative – reflects the capacity of academia to contribute to society. Across all levels of education, it provides material that informs, questions and works towards building a better country.
