SUMMER WORKSHOP
13-21 . JULY . 2024
ÉVORA | FAMALICÃO | SETÚBAL
The “More than Housing” Summer Workshop, open to the participation of students and young architects from the international community and taking place between the 13th and 21st of July 2024, will constitute another moment of reflection.
A group of 135 students in 9 international multidisciplinary teams of 2 tutors each will work on an exploratory design exercise, in contact with residents and other local actors, on 3 exemplary interventions of Portuguese city-building architecture resulting from post-revolution initiatives of April 25th right to housing, enshrined in the Portuguese Constitution of 1975.
The locations under study will be the SAAL “Casal das Figueiras” neighbourhood in Setúbal, a project by Gonçalo Byrne, (1975-1979); the “Quinta da Malagueira” social housing in Évora, a project by Álvaro Siza (1977-1997) and the “Lameiras” social housing block in Famalicão, a project by Noé Diniz (1978-1983). The Workshops will be held in the intervention territories and at the Faculty of Architecture of Porto in partnership with local institutions.
In 1974 the SAAL brigades’ coordinators were around 40 years old at the time, like Álvaro Siza or Gonçalo Byrne, and an important part of the Technical Brigade was made up of young students, just over 20 years old. Today’s students and young architects involved in the Call for Ideas | APRIL 2074 and More than Houses Summer Workshops will have a more active participation in democratic life, sharing the results of their research with society through the More Than Housing | APRIL 2074 Show to open in October 2024 in MUDE/Lisbon.

SITE SELECTION
Following applications, site selection is conducted after 1ST of July. The first preference is honoured unless it exceeds the studio’s capacity, prompting a random selection for subsequent preferences.
There will be given priority of preference along with the order of application.
Ensuring an equitable distribution of participants across all classes is crucial. More than Housing reserves the right to close enrolment for specific studios, considering the number of already registered participants. Studio assignments are revealed during the first day of the workshop (13TH July).

In each studio, there are 2 Workshop Leaders, 1 Assistant, and 15 Participants approximately. The Workshop Leader defines the workshop theme, goals, and process, assisting participants in their work and coordinating the final presentation with the Assistant. The Assistant advises and collaborates with the Workshop Leader, providing assistance to participants on their studio projects.
On the last day of the More than Housing Workshop, the Workshop Leaders, Assistant, and participants collectively ensure the cleanliness of the room. Participants are individually responsible for caring for the building, room, and furniture, and any damages incurred are their responsibility.
It is crucial to note that any classes, activities, or expenses related to studio work conducted outside the workshop sites and faculty are not the responsibility of More than Housing.
